Radiological Control Technician
Reports To: BHI Energy – RP Government Site Operations

SUMMARY/OBJECTIVE:

The Radiological Control Technician under general supervision, performs Radiation Protection Program core element job functions as assigned by site supervision and site management. Typical job responsibilities are to assist and support Radiation Protection leads and supervisors in ensuring the radiological monitoring, controls and processes for measuring and controlling radioactive materials and radiation generating devices are in compliance with all applicable procedures, policies, operational requirements, safety guidelines, managerial direction and DOE Orders.
Radiological Control Technician Job Description includes the following disciplines:
  • Radiological Control Technician (entry level)
  • Jr Radiological Control Technician
  • Sr. Radiological Control Technician
  • Lead Radiological Control Technician
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  1. Provides assigned technical, administrative, or functional support to the Radiation Protection management team
  2. Participate in planning of radiological work, monitoring of radioactive work areas, generation of radiological work permits, establishing radiological work control and monitoring of radiological workers
  3. Performs quantitative measurements and documents results for radioactive materials shipments, free release of excess material and waste from the site
  4. Supports ES&H activities in the field including but not limited to atmospheric monitoring, safety evaluations, self-assessments, and chemical hygiene control program
  5. Makes recommendations for corrective actions to reduce contamination levels, radiation levels, radioactive airborne levels with the ALARA concept
  6. Proficient in a wide variety of radiation protection and associated ES&H support activities
  7. Mentors less experienced technicians
  8. Performs a variety of tasks complex in nature related to radiological, industrial, and chemical safety
  9. Maintains knowledge of and demonstrates ability to perform work safely in accordance with all approved safety policies, procedures and applicable regulations and performs assigned duties in a safe manner
  10. Actively participates in Safety Work Groups
  11. Ensure compliance with all applicable BHI Energy and client technical specifications, procedures, human performance and safety standards and expectations.
  12. Understand and promote a Safety Conscious Work Environment.
  13. Participate in pre-job briefs at the start of shifts and for scheduled work activities. Perform shift turnover duties with assigned personnel or supervision.
  14. Participate in two-minute drills and/or Take a Minute (TAM) in the field prior to the performance of work activities.
  15. Immediately notify Supervision, required site contacts, and prepare documentation of ANY safety or nuclear safety concerns.
  16. Responsible for progress of all assigned work; identify and solve minor issues; and report major issues to supervision for resolution.
  17. Perform dose rate, contamination and airborne radioactivity surveys.
  18. Provide job coverage for work groups to minimize personnel exposure.
  19. Provide briefings and guidance to plant personnel to prohibit unplanned exposure to radioactive material.
  20. Performs other job-related duties as assigned
  21. Participate in investigations of events as required and provide requested statements
COMPETENCIES:
  • Design — Knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principles involved in production of precision technical plans.
  • Mathematics — Knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, statistics, and their applications.
  • Mechanical — Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance as related to piping systems.
  • Near Vision - The ability to see details at close range (within a few feet of the observer).
  • Oral Expression - The ability to communicate information and ideas in speaking so others will understand.
  • Written Expression - The ability to communicate information and ideas in writing so others will understand.
  • English Language - Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work environment may be in an environmental restoration atmosphere (outdated and /or abandoned facilities) and/or in modern facilities. Worker Environments include potential exposures to equipment movement hazards, dangerous hazardous chemicals/solvents, radioactive materials, construction, and /or deconstruction hazards.

Workers will use appropriate personal protective equipment, which may include surgeons clothing, personal protective clothing, respiratory protection devices, fall protection, safety glasses, hard hat, etc., as conditions warrant. Ability to wear respirators and other protective equipment to enter various types of potentially hazardous areas (such as but not limited to vehicular traffic, chemical, dust, fumes, radiological airborne, asbestos, mists, heat stress factors etc.) Workers are required to use/wear the appropriate safety equipment for each applicable task and may establish requirements for the use of protective equipment by other work groups. Work locations may include being in the presence of “rotating equipment” and/or energized equipment. As such, workers must be cognizant of ensuring that the equipment is “under clearance” before working within machine guards or in proximity to all energized components.
The essential functions of this position consist of spending long periods of time in the physical activities of standing, walking, climbing, lifting, carrying, twisting, kneeling, stooping, bending, pushing and pulling and crouching as required. This position also involves handling equipment ranging in weight from one to fifty pounds. Work may also be performed in adverse environmental conditions such as confined spaces, high temperature areas, elevated heights, unlevel or uneven walking surfaces.
The prevailing physical demands this position is medium to heavy.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • High School Diploma or educational equivalent including chemistry and Mathematics courses and training and or work experience in Radiation Protection
  • Ability to pass knowledge exams, performance evaluations and Oral Boards administered at the hiring site using the Training criteria of the U.S. Department of Energy DOE-STD-1098-99 Handbook “Radiological Control Technician Training” and qualification programs as deemed necessary for the various radiological control technician disciplines.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Must meet the requirements of the U.S. Department of Energy Training Qualification Standard as identified at each DOE /NNSA site. (Previous radiological control technician experience requirements may vary between each site and may vary between each unique discipline of Radiological Control Technician, Jr. Radiological Control Technician, Sr. Radiological Control Technician, and Lead Radiological Control Technician). Therefore, previous radiological control technician experience requirements are site specific and contractual specific.

In addition to the above, a candidate will have excellent working knowledge and experience in Microsoft Office software as required. Proven ability to demonstrate a high level of ethical behavior, integrity and trust. Knowledge of BHI Energy processes and procedures and utilization of developed tools to most effectively manage work is essential. Must actively demonstrate the BHI company values and support the BHI Ethics and Standards. Must have the ability to obtain and maintain a working knowledge of BHI and client technical manuals and procedures; to pass BHI and client specific training and qualifications as required; subject to personnel call out as required in support of emergent work requirements; to work overtime, to include shift work, weekends, and holidays as needed; and be able to pass all background and screening requirements for the position, to include work physicals, drug and/or alcohol screening.
