Overview

TRC is seeking an Engineering Technician in the San Francisco and/or Oakland market to provide technical support to our commercial, institutional, and residential energy efficiency and green building programs in California and across the nation. Responsibilities include design consulting focused on projects involving reconfiguration of behind-the meter-building electrical systems particularly for electrification, photovoltaic, energy storage, distributed generation, and resiliency.

Candidates must possess technical capabilities including knowledge of electrical systems, their associated codes, and installation methods. The desired candidate will work both independently and collaboratively on market transforming projects and programs that promote building electrification and resiliency.

This is a hybrid opportunity where employee may go into the San Francisco office approximately 1 to 2 times a week as needed. Flexible schedule.


Responsibilities

  • Conduct field inspections of commercial sites to inventory and estimate usage of existing electrical equipment and determine electrical system capacity.
  • Use design tools as needed to conduct pre-design analysis for sizing battery storage, PV, and DER systems.
  • Use design tools as needed to conduct pre-design analysis for sizing/resizing electrical system capacity to support electrification, electric vehicle charging, battery storage, and PV systems.
  • Provide general assistance with proposed system pricing including available incentives.
  • Understand building energy and electrical codes related to the work performed.
  • Conduct site visits to evaluate, install and remove temporary metering devices, and troubleshoot metering system performance.
  • Function as part of a collaborative work team.
  • Communicate with clients, contractors, and program administrators regarding program requirements.
  • Manage and engage construction subcontractors with metering installation support.
  • Travel is required about 25% of time, typically around the San Francisco Bay Area and Northern California. Some occasional travel to other areas or states.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or related field (preferred); or, Electrician Trainee/Apprentice/Certified Electrician, or commensurate experience.
  • 5 years of general knowledge of building systems required; Detailed knowledge of PV systems and battery storage systems.
  • 5 years of knowledge/experience with 120/208 and 277/480 volt building electrical systems required; able to read single line diagrams, calculate electric loads, determine electrical panel sizing, and estimate the cost of modifications.
  • Field experience: hands-on solar, electrical panel wiring, or related electrical installation; familiarity with utility and field metering and data collection software. Rated NFPA 70E Qualified desirable.
  • Hands on experience with mechanical systems (HVAC, automotive, industrial, construction, etc.) and problem solving is a strong plus.
  • Experience with PV design, electrification, or building system resiliency is preferred.
  • Experience with spreadsheet-based analysis techniques; HelioScope/Energy Toolbase/Homer/PVWatts desired.
  • Academic and / or professional experience displaying a strong interest in sustainability and green building is a strong plus.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills.

Work Location: Oakland, CA and/or San Francisco, CA market (hybrid/flexible schedule)

In accordance with local law, the following compensation range is applicable for the job and location associated with this requisition: $41.00 - $53.00/hour. Compensation will vary based upon experience, education, skill level, and other compensable factors.
